About the department

 Santali Department started in 2014 with General Course and from 2015 Honors Course was introduced under Burdwan University.  Since 2017 the department has been brought under Bankura University.  At present, the department has an admission capacity of 80 students in honours courses affiliated to Bankura University.  In this session (2023-24) 16 students are studying in Semester-I, 20 in Semester-3 and 15 in Semester-V.  The department encourages students' liberal education to facilitate critical reading, humanistic reflection, and functional understanding of language and literature. Communication, thereby motivating students to participate in shaping society as informed, empathetic and responsible citizens.  The department has five young dynamic faculty members, all five are SACT.  The department prides itself on them, which inspire students to explore interdisciplinary fields with literary and cultural studies.  The department provides soft skills training and personality building to the students for future career placements.  Creative exploration through routine classes, on-demand online classes, use of multimedia in teaching, trips, cultural events, college magazines and projects;  Invited lectures, feedback system, career counselling all contribute to maintaining a liberal and conducive environment of the department, appreciation and application of literature in life.

Santali is a language.  Its main objective is to develop and expand the knowledge base of the department.    The department actively participates in the fields of culture, philosophy, grammar, linguistics, comparative studies of international literature and in-depth studies in various disciplines and engages in research aimed at considering why.  International literature and socio-cultural post will be helpful for tribal literature. 

The departmental curriculum inspires students to become good citizens.  The Department's earnest endeavour is to preserve and enrich Oriental literature, culture, philosophy, science and thought.  This branch of our college under Bankura University is actively engaged in educating students through in-depth study and research in advanced areas of specialization including different domains like Literature, Language Grammar, Linguistics, Oral Santali Literature, Manuscript Studies and its comparative studies.  Linguistics, Aesthetics and Poetics and interdisciplinary projects, it will lead to the discovery of a world that is full of happiness and co-existence. 

Our department strongly believes in achieving cooperation and collaboration for successful management of its activities and achievement of goals. At least the friendly association attract any well-intentioned person with deep penetration into Santali or related field.  Although the department has only five state aided college teachers, they are full of experience, endless energy and youth. Every teacher in the department is competent and academically very dynamic, with many achievements in their own specialities.  The students of the department are academically very active and culturally outgoing. We promise to make a mark of academic intellectuals.

4) Vision Statement: The department embodies an assignment to explore and encourage research in various aspects of Santali language usage and literary studies and to welcome comparative studies of scientific thought existing in various Santali texts.  It is working flawlessly.  Most of the participating students come from socio-economically backward classes. We strongly believe that this is an achievement for the youth from the marginalized sections of the society.  This will help the developing society to become fresher, wiser and more vibrant.  The youth will become aware of their potential, rights and dues. Above all, the youth section enriched in the light of such education will surely spread the light of knowledge, prosperity and happiness not only within themselves or their own community but also for the benefit of the country.

5) Objective:

  1. Providing knowledge of traditional textual thinking teaching and research.
  2. Editing and publishing of unpublished Santali texts and criticism.
  3. To impart creative skills to students.
  4. To prepare a departmental library with quality and resources.
  5. Conducting international, national, state level seminars, conferences, workshops, symposiums etc. on interdisciplinary aspects of oriental education.

     The following points are also emphasized –

  • To inculcate the sense of courtesy in the behaviour of the students by imparting quality education to them.
  • Accelerate their physical development through participation in annual competitive sports besides studies.
  • Encouraging writing in the college's own magazine to express their creativity.
  • Development of the knowledge base of the students.
  • Assisting students to achieve their goals by participating in teaching properly.
  • Supporting them in achieving a successful professional career.
  • Emphasis on Add-on Courses to acquire external knowledge in addition to subject knowledge.
  • To enrich the library in terms of collection of modern books and magazines of Santali.
  • Helping to become an ideal and responsible citizen of the country.
  • To produce intellectually, morally upright and socially active students to serve the country.
  • Assisting them in availing various government services to sustain their academic activities etc.

8) Co-curriculum activities: Departmental Language Victory Day celebration, SantalManishi Birth and Death Day celebration, Hull Divas etc.  Also celebrate Teacher's Day, Independence Day, Birth and Death Day of National Intellectuals etc. Also welcoming the new students and felicitating the senior students and participating in various events such as recitation, Dance, and Song etc.
